U.S. health officials have leveraged the star power of first lady Michelle Obama to roll out a new campaign against obesity, a preventable condition that drains billions of dollars from the economy.

Obama, who plans to take on childhood obesity as a cause, headlined the launch on Thursday of Surgeon General Regina Benjamin’s blueprint for what can be done at home, school and work to reverse the epidemic.

In her first initiative since becoming “America’s doctor,” Benjamin issued a report on the consequences of obesity to start a national dialogue on the subject.

“The number of Americans, like me, who are struggling with their weight and health conditions related to their weight remains much too high,” she said.

Obesity Cancer Up By 77% In Europe.

The numbers are staggering. It seems that last year, over 124,000 people in Europe alone developed cancer simply because they were overweight. A jump of 77 percent over a 6 year period.

Studies done in Europe seems to show that overweight women have a higher incidence of developing cancer. This study went on to reveal that central European countries were recording higher numbers of new cases of cancer on account of being fat as compared to the rest of Europe.

The most common cancers linked to excess body weight were endometrial, breast and colorectal cancers. A leading researcher from the British University at Cardiff speaking at the ECCO-ESMO European Cancer Congress held in Berlin recently, was quoted as saying “It is possible that obesity may become the biggest attributable cause of cancer in women within the next decade”

They researchers used data from the WHO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer for their research and based it on WHO definitions, classing overweight as having a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 30, and obese as having a BMI of 30 or more. From an estimate of 70,000 cases of cancer that were attributed to obesity in 2002, their projections show that the number has increased to 124,000.

As for men, the figures were much less at 3.2percent of new cancer cases as compared to women who recorded 8.6

Obesity has long been known to raise the risk of cancer, and the evidence continues to mount. In June 2009, a Swedish study noted that women who had weight-loss surgery were 42 percent less likely to develop cancer during a 10-year study.

The researchers went on to say “In the face of an unabating obesity epidemic, and apparent failure of public health policies to control weight gain, there is a need to look at alternative strategies, including pharmacological approaches”.

Fatties Are Causing Global Warming

The Sun, a prominent newspaper from the UK has run a news report today with the headline - ‘Fatties Cause Global Warming’.

Well, it basically says that the rising number of fat people throught the world were blamed yesterday for global warming.
Scientists are saying that the increase in the number of obese people results in an increase in food production which is a major cause of CO2 gas emission - which then goes on to warm the climate.

It also points out that overweight people would rather drive than walk - and this is adding to the damage of our environment as well.

Quoting a doctor from a Medical School in London, who said “Moving about in a heavy body is like driving in a gas guzzler.” Each fat person is said to be responsible for emitting a tonne more of climate-warming carbon dioxide per year than a thin one.

This is resulting in the creation of an extra BILLION TONNES of CO2 a year if you take into account the number of overweight people as per WHO estimates.

So, what do you think? Fact or just another media hype?

There’s more to read at the Sun, so go read and let us know how you feel about this.

Will Bariatric Surgery Help Me?

As much as Bariatric Surgery seems like a quick solution to obesity, you must be made aware of the complications that may arise from such a traumatic procedure. This surgery is a serious operation and you should not be of the opinion that this is a minor procedure.

First and foremost there is the risk of surgery, and all the post operative complications that may occur following any surgical procedure. You must also be aware that most gastric surgical procedures are not reversible. Then again don’t forget the post operative healing period and the discomfort associated. This may stretch for weeks.bariatric-surgery

Patients who have performed Bariatric Surgery will be required to follow a very strict dietary regime plus perform exercise regularly to keep their weight in check. Although your doctor will lead you on to support programs to guide and keep you motivated, at the end of the day the onus will be on you to keep on track.

Now of course your doctor is not going to send you off to surgery without a thorough evaluation of your need, both health wise and psychosocial factors, including a complete risk evaluation. However it may be wise for you to be aware of the post-operative expectations. Speak to your doctor about how this surgery will affect your lifestyle, just how much weight loss can you realistically expect and how will you look after surgery and the changes to your eating and dietary habits.

Here’s something to think about well before you consider surgery. If you have never truly followed a proper weight loss program or if you feel that you would like to give a new revolutionary program a try, then you might want to check out Strip That Fat. There is no starvation involved. It involves eating the right food for maximum weight loss. Look at it this way. It seems to be working for many and it most probably might work for you. Scientists discover appetite suppressant the world is waiting for.

Obesity has become a worldwide epidemic and effective obesity treatments are scarce. The CDC reports that in the United States, about 66% of adults are obese or overweight, as are 16% of kids aged 6 to 19.

This is alarming to say the least. Look at those figures again. 66% of adults are fat. What this says is that were you to pick 10 adults and get them to stand in a row, odds are that 7 of them will be fat.

Now for those who are overweight, this may come somewhat as consolatory, because you now begin to feel you are not alone. But hey, that does not make it right!

If given a choice, you rather be slim than be burdened with all that fat around. Having been fat myself before, I can tell you that my biggest regret was to have blown away almost a decade of my life because there was some much I could not do due to my size. Well choices are about decisions and if you plan to take some action and dump that fat, then here’s some good news for you.

A substance present in our small intestine is showing great promise as the ‘appetite suppressant’ obese people the world over have been waiting for. Called NAPE (has some long name, Google it if you need to know) is produced when fatty foods are ingested. NAPE is carried to the brain where it acts as a feedback loop and tells the brain to shut down eating.
Scientists at Yale studied the substance and found that mice and rats that were injected with NAPE ate less food and lost weight. Nape seemed to reduce appetite by acting on neurons in the hypothalamus that stimulate hunger by reducing the activity of those neurons. Writing in the journal, Cell, the researchers believe this discovery could lead to new approaches to fighting obesity.

After five days on NAPE, rats ate 30% less food and lost a quarter of their weight. Rodents that didn’t get NAPE actually gained a little flab. Shulman’s team didn’t notice any other permanent behavioural changes in the NAPE-fed mice.

This is great news, but there’s a downside. They are still at primate (monkey) trials. This means that they are a long way from human trails and then, and if all’s well it will be approved and you see it on the shelves at drugstores. Well, it would be unfair to call that ‘bad’ news. Someday, in the future, obese people the world over may be helped by this discovery.

Now, what if you’re overweight now and can’t wait for them to finish their trials. Look at this -Strip That Fat works pretty well. There are numerous testimonies with people getting results in just 7 days and the plan is not taxing on your diet, or your wallet. Comes with an unconditional ‘Money Back’ so give it a go and check it out.

Get A Toga - Quick Fix Fat Loss Surgery.

I suppose the temptation can be irresistible. Losing weight with a diet and physical exercise plan can be slow and frustrating for those who seek results fast, and many people these days are opting for surgery.

So is fat loss surgery the solution for you?

Turning to the surgeon’s knife for a quick fix weight loss solution is an option which 200,000 people in the United States take each year. The numbers have increased as more insurance plans begin to cover the cost of the surgery.

The results can be quick and dramatic thus having an immense psycological impact on the patient. The surgeons who offer such treatment believe that the weight loss by such means outweigh the health risks that come with being overweight.

However there is a downside to it. There is of course the dangers associated with requiring surgery for one. The surgical slits will leave scars and the pain associated with surgery to abdominal muscles remain for a while.

Bariatric or the Toga.

This treatment is called Bariatric surgery and as high as 20 percent of post-op patients seem to require follow up operations. Common complications are hernias and leaks in the digestive track. About a third develop gallstones and many become vitamin deficient if they do not take supplements.

There is also a tendency for develop gastrointestinal problems and the post-op death rate stats are at about 1 in 50.

A more recent procedure seems intresting as it requires no cutting. Called the Toga method, it is a simple non-invasive procedure where the surgeon runs a stapler down your throat and staples up your stomach from the inside. This results in your stomach holding only a small amount of food. Still experimental, a few patients have already tried this in the US, and a lot more in Europe and Mexico. All said, this procedure is showing promising results with over 40 percent in weight loss after 1 year of treatment.

Having mentioned all this, you should realize that such surgery should be your last resort after having attempted a weight loss diet and exercise plan. Seek your doctor’s advise and there is no harm in going for a second opnion before you proceed with Bariatic or the Toga surgery.

A great fat loss diet plan is called Strip That Fat. There is no starvation involved. It involves eating the right food for the maximum weight loss. Many of those who have tried it have seen results in 7 to 14 days. It comes with an uncoditional money back gaurantee, so you might want to try it before you even want to consider surgery.
